Many indigenous children and youth of the Ngöbe Buglé community born in Costa Rica to Panamanian parents – known locally as Chiriticos – have had difficulties obtaining their birth certificates, since they were not registered at birth. Their nationality is undetermined, and in some cases they may even be at risk of statelessness.
